Patient flow and access

An examination of the issues involved in unlocking the capacity of acute care hospitals and our national healthcare infrastructure.

Healthcare reform is likely to bring several million more patients per year more fully into the already stressed U.S. healthcare system. Not only will this strain the capacity of many hospitals, but it also may cause wait times and availability to replace coverage as the limiters of access. Expanding access to healthcare will require significant improvements in patient flow at most hospitals. This white paper outlines the three essential steps in optimizing patient flow and discusses why patient flow is the best available lever to expand capacity and improve operating margin.

I am interested in learning about patient flow.

  • gerrianne costantini patient flow coordinator SJHC April 2, 2010 12:49 PM

need information on current findings, our daily census is only about 120 being proactive, planning and handleing "bottlenecks" is key.

Thanks for the note, Gerrianne. I'll send some information separately.

Worth mentioning is that we're building predictive models so that decision makers (charge nurses, bed desk, etc) have tools to see bottlenecks a few shifts ahead.

    Thanks again!

Does your system allow for the following?

    1. Allow for different categories of patient to prioritise for bookings.

    2. Repeat visits by patients.

    3. List of around 100 patients at any one time.

    4. Some new patients and some patients leave at any one time.
