Improving the success of HIT projects at Providence Health & Services

When adding HIT systems, most organizations focus 80% of their time and resources on the equipment but give far less attention to motivating employees to use the new systems. Failure to address this issue is one of the principal reasons that many HIT implementations fail or technology is utilized sub-optimally.   To avoid this problem during a recent EHR implementation, Providence Health & Services, serving the Washington-Montana region, used change-management techniques and achieved end user adoption rates exceeding 90%, compared with previous rates of less than 60%. That, say hospital executives, has positively impacted productivity and clinical outcomes.
