Process improvements help clear ED boarding

Discover how simulation modeling helped Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut achieve a 26% improvement in fast-track median LOS in the ED.  An increase in ED boarding typically signals a systemic problem in patient flow further up the line in telemetry and med-surg units. Smoothing the discharge curve on these high-volume inpatient units can help relieve pressure in the ED and improve access to care. That was the experience of Waterbury Hospital. When the hospital shifted to earlier discharge times and improved room turnover, ED LOS was significantly reduced.  Simulation modeling and problem-solving sessions known as Kaizens were key enablers.
