Taking a stroke center to the next level

When St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston uncovered a large unmet need for stroke care in their community, they took steps to create a hub-and-spoke model of stroke outreach.

St. Luke's has a sophisticated stroke program that treats more than 800 patients each year. In 2008 the hospital engaged consultants to assess the program and make recommendations on taking its performance to the next level. A key finding of the analysis was the large unmet need in the Houston area for stroke care.

Despite the presence of six major hospitals, only 25% of stroke victims were being treated at facilities with the neurosciences capabilities required for optimal stroke care. This led St. Luke's to consider a hub-and-spoke model of stroke outreach to reach thousands of potential new patients.
