To clear a bottleneck in ICU admissions, St. Charles Medical Center thought they needed to add another ICU room.  Instead they turned the problem over to their Lean quality improvement team who assessed the situation and recommended a reconfiguration of existing ICU space. By moving equipment, consolidating supplies, and standardizing processes, they were able to free up space for an additional ICU room without the expense of new construction. Transfer delays were eliminated and the Center is on track to add $1.7 million in revenue.
